Virtual Charity Walk

I have been asked by my local Hospice to provide guidance on how they can start to best use Social Networking Platforms like Facebook to raise money through a virtual event e.g virtually climbing Everest

I am told someone in Australia did something similar and raised circa £250K

the idea is that you work out how many steps it is to climb Everest and then get friends on Facebook to walk the steps using a pedometer and get sponsorship

any advice on how to leverage facebook for this would be great. Also how do we log the steps and collect money
